if you’re writing a character as deaf pls do not revolve their entire personality/struggles/interests around that. also portraying their life as pitiful is quite offensive, the Deaf community has faced a history of oppression and as a reaction to that, they’ve turned-
deafness into something empowering. i’m not saying they don’t face hardships, but creating a whole sob story of “you must be so sad that you can’t hear” is just...ugh. i took 3 years of ASL and the curriculum teaches just as much about history and culture as they do the language.
please don’t waste your time writing a deaf character as someone who has to “overcome” their differences when in reality there’s sooo many Deaf people who are proud of this part of themselves.
(side note: lowercase d = deaf according to the actual definition aka hearing loss

uppercase D = a deaf person involved in their community, prefers a lifestyle less catered to hearing people)
