(A thread)
I haven’t been able to find any exact math breakdowns from sources that may not be biased, but from what I have found, 2 cents of every dollar spent on federal taxes goes to education. You probably pay less than $10 a month toward education for hour child. https://twitter.com/aureylian/status/1286698808722817025">https://twitter.com/aureylian...
That’s $10 spread across many school districts and then many schools from there. Teachers salary is therefore a fraction of your tax dollars.
But let’s step away from your contributions for a second. Let’s look at how schools are a Petri dish for illnesses. Every year, students are packed into classrooms to the point where it has been stated that there is actual overcrowding in classes.
There is a reason portables we’re common place in schools I grew up in, until new schools started popping up. At one point, I even had some schools who only served 2 grade levels because they were so packed. This was a school district in an area that was mostly farm land.
Imagine what schools in major cities would look like. I shouldn’t have to say this as most adults my age (in their 30s) should have their own experiences, but I make this point because I feel like most parents have forgot this.
So with a national pandemic, and the fact classrooms will likely be unable to give students a full 6 feet apart at all times for proper social distancing, and even if everyone wore a mask at all times (they won’t), what do you think would happen?
Remember that spike in cases when there were large protests, clubs and bars reopening and being packed happening all at the same time. Imagine this happening again, but this time your children are being forced into this crowded setting and you have no choice.
And then imagine the teachers and school districts who is already under-funded as it is having to face crowds of parents who just simply don’t understand, demanding they put their health and the health of their children at risk.
You can’t act like remote schooling wasn’t common at the end of this last school year, so it’s not like teachers just refused to do their job.
At this point, I would say that these parents are just tired of having their children at home and want any excuse to demand someone else babysit their children so they can get a little break. I’ve got friends who have said this, so I know it’s out there.
Let’s face it though. Your individual contribution to education every two weeks is not enough for you to have a say in what schools do. If a school chooses to do remote classes, your child is still being given an education.
Education is what school is all about, not a baby sitter you only have to pay $10 every month for. If you were given a voucher, what would use use it for? You could buy a lot of Raman with that $10. Or maybe beans and franks.
So I ask people to, for once, leave your selfish desires and politics elsewhere and if you won’t value or prioritize the health and safety of educators, let’s put our kids health first at the very least.
