I fucking love Portland.

It’s a complicated mess of a city, with a lot of ugly shit in both its past and present, and the quirky indie-hipster thing is more caricature than reality.

But it CARES. So fucking much. Earnestly and passionately and sometimes clumsily, but for real.

It is very surreal to realize that your hometown, which has not once been electorally significant in your lifetime, is now the battleground from which Trump has decided to escalate his fascist takeover, driving a gargantuan wedge into the crises that already existed here.

But it is also incredibly powerful to watch as so many of the things that are terrible about Portland are met with unyielding opposition by so many of the things that are extraordinary about Portland.

It’s hard to know how this ends, with a president whose sole motivation in all circumstances is the desire to feel like A Tough Guy, and who therefore has no motivation to back down.

But I’m incredibly proud of my city.

We aren’t backing down, either.
