I saw many Canadians talking about #Juneteenth this year. In Canada, we should talk about August 1st, Emancipation Day. #EmancipationDay marks the anniversary of the Slavery Abolition Act in 1883, a British Act that obviously applied to its colonies, and therefore to Canada.
"Wait, didn& #39;t Ontario (Upper Canada) end slavery years before?"
Technically, yes, in 1793. But the act actually didn& #39;t free "a single slave", so it& #39;s only in 1883 that slavery was actually abolished. https://www.pc.gc.ca/apps/dfhd/page_nhs_eng.aspx?id=1623">https://www.pc.gc.ca/apps/dfhd...

"How do I commemorate it"? To be honest, it& #39;s the first year I know about this, thanks to @sandela from the Sandy and Nora podcast. I recommend following her, and @BLM_TO which she created.
Then, I& #39;d say we actually read all the posts we archived and the books we bought a few months back during the peak of the BLM protests.
Also, @CBC has programming starting tomorrow to commemorate Emancipation Day: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/how-to-watch-being-black-in-canada-emancipation-day-cbc-1.5660937">https://www.cbc.ca/news/cana...

and TOMORROW, @AshaTomlinson& #39;s new series Being Black in Canada starts! Maybe that& #39;s a good way to start?
