I saw many Canadians talking about #Juneteenth this year. In Canada, we should talk about August 1st, Emancipation Day. #EmancipationDay marks the anniversary of the Slavery Abolition Act in 1883, a British Act that obviously applied to its colonies, and therefore to Canada.
"Wait, didn't Ontario (Upper Canada) end slavery years before?"
Technically, yes, in 1793. But the act actually didn't free "a single slave", so it's only in 1883 that slavery was actually abolished. https://www.pc.gc.ca/apps/dfhd/page_nhs_eng.aspx?id=1623
"How do I commemorate it"? To be honest, it's the first year I know about this, thanks to @sandela from the Sandy and Nora podcast. I recommend following her, and @BLM_TO which she created.
and TOMORROW, @AshaTomlinson's new series Being Black in Canada starts! Maybe that's a good way to start?
