people are STILL doing the fox eye trend, so here’s a thread about why it’s harmful!:
i’ve seen a lot of people using icons of people or taking selfies while pulling back their eyes (like in these pictures). many east-asians have been mocked for their eyes, but as soon as whites start slanting their eyes its suddenly cool
if you have someone doing these as your icon, change it!! no longer do these poses while taking selfies! our eyes, which we have been mocked for, are not your aesthetic! dont do this!
even though they may not have intended to be harmful, it still hurts when myself and so many other east-asians have experienced racism and had our features mocked. its not ok that racism towards asians has become so normalized and people have excused this as “just a trend”
whites making their eyes look like this is literally yellowface! this is katharine hepburn (a White Woman) in the movie dragon seed where she plays an east asian. this isn’t some new trend, this is something that has been used to mocked east asians for decades.
people have also literally pulled their eyes back with tape and other things. this is not ok!!
this is not only extremely weird, but has also been used for yellowface as well (shirley maclaine for the movie my geisha, which has a racist title anyways)
historically, east asians have literally had surgery to make their eyes seem “less foreign and threatening” as well. do not fucking pull your eyes back when our eyes have historically been the subject of countless acts of racism. (credit to @/dearasianyouth on ig)
the # foxeyes on instagram having more than 63k posts just shows how normalized racism towards east asians is. please stop doing this and call out any people you see who are.
its the historical background. i dont care why people want to alter their features and pull their eyes back when this has been used for yellowface and when asians have undergone eye surgery to assimilate
