1. Ecology is complex.
Each site has its peculiarities. But, a fundamental rule is that the more varied the physical inputs the more distinct niches there are for different species, leading to more interactions, giving richer biodiversity.

2. One physical input is sunlight - plants need it so it’s the basis for most ecosystems. Plants provide food but also structure, shelter.
Some plants are adapted to shade. Some animals prefer shade at least some of the time. Variety gives diversity. @SouthHackneyLab @jonburkeUK

3. The Environment Agency wrote a paper called ‘Keeping Rivers Cool’. http://www.ecrr.org/Portals/27/Publications/FINAL_Keeping%20Rivers%20Cool_Guidance%20Manual.pdf">https://www.ecrr.org/Portals/2...
It says 50% deciduous tree cover along waterways is ideal. Variety spatially and in time: deciduous tree drop their leaves allowing more sunlight in colder months.

4. This is one of the diagrams from the EA paper showing 50% dappled shade, 50% sunshine.
Hackney’s LP33 policy LP52: A & Bv are relevant here. Buildings all along our water spaces damages biodiversity and public amenity.

5. LP33’s policy LP52: 11.25 says ‘proposals.. must support aims of.. the European Water Framework Directive which seeks to achieve Good Ecological Status or Potential across Hackney’s waterways.’
This aim includes our canals which many dismiss as navigable sewers.

6. We have turned Kingsland Basin into a nature reserve. The Regent’s Canal could be a blue green corridor linking people and wildlife to the Lea Valley.
Imagine Hackney as a forest borough, rivers running through. There would be no urge to escape to the countryside.

7. The potential exists and so does funding for this project but political will is needed to protect our water spaces until everyone can see their worth.
Policy guidelines exist to prevent the ‘canyoning’ effect on our canal system. Please use them. @mayorofhackney
