Whenever I think of @PortlandPolice, I think of Nathan Thomas, 9 years old, killed by police when some showoff police outside the house tried to shoot the man who took him hostage. I think of Kendra James, killed in a traffic stop when she drove away. The cop said he was partly
inside the car, but the bullet trajectory proved he was a liar. He got a fucking medal. I think of Jason Washington who took his friend's gun away then got killed by the cops who were too eager to kill to stop and see what was happening.
I think of James Chasse, beaten so badly his ribs were crushed and he suffocated while the cops sent away the ambulance and tossed him in jail where he died. They lied on the stand. Booking video proved they lied. So they quit recording bookings
And I think of Jose Mejia Poot and his death breaks my heart. It all began with Tri-Met and a racist bus driver. Mejia Poot was 15 cents shy of his bus fare. I once forgot my pass and the driver waived me through. I have seen drivers shrug of minor shortages. But not this one
He refused to allow Mejia Poot to get 15 cents from other riders, it was off the bus, though of course, he had already put all his coins in the coin box, so he was worse off and didn't want to leave without his money. So the driver called the police
This is over 20 cents. (not 15) Now, he did not speak much English. The police came. They beat him in front of passengers. Then they took him to jail. He was an epileptic and they took away his meds. He had a seizure. So they took him to a mental health facility
He's had no phone call. His parents don't know where he is. He's been two days without his meds. He becomes agitated and bars a door. They call the police who come in and shoot him. They were cleared. They are a stain on humanity
Dead because a racist bus driver would not let him ride 20 cents short and called the fucking cops. Because the cops beat him, the jail took away his meds, and not one interpreter spoke with him to help him understand what was happening.
When Mejia Poot died, I decided I would never call the police to report anything except a life or death situation - someone being beaten or shot at. Not for any property crime, not for the dealer who stashed drugs in another neighbor's shrubbery for transfers. Nothing
When they lied on the stand in the Chasse trial and did not get indicted for perjury when the video leaked proving they lied, I decided I would not believe them. When they protected alt-right criminals with warrants from arrest by warning them and kept alt-right snipers secret
from the mayor, I realized the greatest enemy the people of Portland have is their police department.
