Idk how the outfit hwasa is wearing is called in other African countries but in Cameroon we call them "boubou"

In the past only the nobility could wear it because it was made with the most expensive fabrics and each broderies has its importance +
bc they represented the social status and the ethnicity of the person who wears it
the embroidery on the collar is handmade, the more complex the pattern is and the more precious the fabric is, the more time it takes

Trust me I've worked in my aunt atelier i know what i'm saying
I also know that in some part of Africa esp in the west only Muslim people could wear it but it became really popular among other communities and many big africans couturiers/tailor even fusioned it with other traditional and modern outfits to create a new style
I should also precise that the Boubou is a TRADITIONAL OUTFIT
So the best models are mostly worn during IMPOPRTANT and TRADITIONAL CEREMONIES
Like i said it takes a lot of time and money to make so it's just normal to reserve it for big occasions
My mom have a really beautiful one, it's green with gold broderies, she only wears it one time every 2 years

I grew up in Cameroon so i know that it's not only limited to one ethnicity, everybody can wear it but you need to be African first sooo
And obv the sinplest model can be
Worn in your daily life bc it's appropriate for the climate
Now back to our dear black unnie hwasa
To put it simply she wore a traditional African gown to scare people for the sake of her variety show
I don't know if it resonates in your mind like it does in mine but this is so fcking disrespectful and offensive
Maybe i should precise that bc of huge stereotypes shared through media about black people, most people on this planet are scared and feel threatened by us and our skin
So associating such a meaningful outfit to this mess is a big no to me
Idkiyk this part of history but black people were stripped of their culture yeah even in Africa, their own territory
When slavery was still really strong and even during colonialism my ancestors didn't even have the right to speak their mother tongue
If they weren't naked they had to wear the white men rags
So no i won't let this slide

And what's even more annoying about Hwasa attitude is that it's not even the first time that she's being so disrespectful and ignorant
Stop telling us that it's not a big deal, stop telling us that CA isn't real
You can't imagine what is like to lose your culture, to have to re learn everything just to see a non-black woman who is a lil bit too tan for her country steal it from you and disrespect the way she did
I also saw this tweet and this is pure bullshit and another way to justify the cultural appropriation

To put it simply Kaftans are tuniques/gowns and they are worn in many cultures esp in middle east, north and west Africa bc https://twitter.com/manticoremag/status/1286901523390357504?s=19
Those regions have the same influences
And in each regions there're different variations of the Kaftans
Depending on many factors
In my country /Cameroon/ and in the vast majority of west Africa we call it "Boubou" and we wear it with a headset
And what Hwasa wore is the west African model
So IT IS cultural appropriation and even if the means wasn't to scare people IT IS STILL OFFENSIVE
For e.g, here you have 4 variations of the Kaftans
Depending on your region, ethnicity it has different names
1. Moroccan for ceremonies,
2.Algerian (Oranais)
3. Senegalese boubou for ceremonies
4. Its a 3 but more simple for every day

And Hwasa wore a model between the 3 and 4
⚠️⚠️DISCLAIMER⚠️⚠️
MBC responded to the allegations of Cultural Appropriation and Mockery
They explained that Hwasa outfit is a "Korean sauna look" i personally didn't know they had this kind of outfit bc i'm more used to see them with the outfits shown in the last 2 pics
And i'm sorry to have misunderstood her, IT IS NOT CA
However someone told me that it was still important to show the similarities between her outfit and the traditional gown, for educational purposes and to show that our outrage was justified
So i won't delete this thread
Plus i love sharing bits of my culture so why not 😊🤷🏾‍♀️

Anyway i'm still mad that once again some people here really tried to shut us down
For you it may seems like we are "complaining for nothing" or "just playing the victims" as i saw one say
But imagine what's like to be ripped off the essence of your identity, being criticized/judged/mocked at bc of it and see another person unrelated to your culture, claiming it like it's theirs and being praised for it.
You wouldn't be happy at all
