"Characteristics of a Muslim"
Islam, a name given by Allah to this religion (Quran 5:4), is an Arabic word which literally means obedience and peace. ISLAM is derived from the Arabic root “SALEMA”: peace, purity, submission and obedience.
So ‘Islam’ would mean the path of those who are obedient to Allah and who establish peace with Him and His creatures. Its follower are called Muslims. Islam is not a new religion. It is the same message & guidance which Allah revealed to all prophets before Prophet Muhammadﷺ.
Six main Articles of faith in Islam
1. To believe in the Oneness of Allah
2. To believe in all His Angels
3. To believe in all His Books
4. To believe in all His Prophets
5. To believe in the Day of Resurrection
6. To believe in the Decree of Allah
The Five Pillars of Islam
To the fold of Islam i.e. to be Muslim, one has to know, believe, accept totally & sincerely apply the five basic principles (Pillars) on which Islam is based: Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) said: Islam is based on the following five pillars (principles).
1. Bearing witness that there is no God but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah
2. Observance of Prayer
3. Paying Zakat
4. Fasting during Ramadhan
5. Pilgrimage to the house of Allah
Below We have added some extracts from the Friday Sermon (dated 25-09-2009) delivered by Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad(aba) on the topic of "Distinctive qualities of servants of the Gracious God"
A distinct characteristic of servants of the Gracious God is that they walk on the earth with humility and dignity. They are not possessed of pointless strictness or anger or unnecessary leniency that may lead to dishonorableness.
Another distinct characteristic of servants of the God is that each individual is of peaceable nature & counsels others gently. The humility & collective dignity that is adopted in accordance with the first commandment/characteristic should be abided by when one is in power.
One more distinctive feature is that they spend their night prostrating and standing before their Lord and pray to remain distant from Hell. This includes the Hell of the Hereafter and the hell on earth.
A distinction of the servants of the Gracious God is that they totally avoid shirk (associating partners with God).
Another characteristic is that they do not commit fornication or adultery. This also includes watching vulgar and improper spectacles for entertainment. These days some TV channels and Internet sites show vulgarity which is tantamount to mental & visual fornication.
One more characteristic is that neither do they tell lies nor do they give false testimony. Falsehood plays a huge part in the decline of nations. Divine communities aspire to attain heights, if falsehood penetrates among them, then they do not remain God’s special people.
Lets have a look on some other characteristics of a Muslim
The Best of Morals:
The Holy Founder of Islam ﷺ said: “I was sent to complete the best of morals.” It is obligatory for Muslims to improve their manners & to treat people gently. He said: Nothing will be put on man's scale on Resurrection Day better than good manners.
What do Muslims wear?
There is no one dress code prescribed for Muslims. This is simply due to the fact that there are more than one billion Muslims around the world living under different climates. Islam stresses the relationship between the physical body and spirituality.
Islam requires modesty both for men & women in dress. Clothes should be loose & the curves of the body should not be discernible, especially in public. Men are also required to be modest in their dress & cover their body, covering hair is encouraged during formal prayers.
Believer's Attributes
Surely, success does come to the believers, Who are humble in their prayers, And who shun all that which is vain, And who are active in paying the Zakat, And who guard their chastity, Except from their wives or what their right hands possess,
for then they are not to be blamed; — And who are watchful of their trusts and their covenants, And who are strict in the observance of their Prayers. These are the heirs, Who will inherit Paradise. They will abide therein." Holy Quran [23:1-10]
The Holy Prophet ﷺ describes
“Blessed is he who earns his living through lawful ways & he whose inward status is good, outward is decent; spends his surplus wealth in charity; abstains from excessive talking; people remain safe of evil from him; he treats others with justice.”
A Muslim should be a useful member of the community in which he or she lives. The Holy Prophet ﷺ said: “All mankind belongs to Allah; therefore the most favored by Allah is the one who is good to his or her own family” He also said, “Love of one’s country is a part of faith.”
To Summarize The Characteristics of a Believer, these are the attributes that he must adhere to
1. Doing what is lawful and righteous deeds.
2. Having good morals and treating people with respect.
3. Having a purified heart and soul, neither hating others nor being hypocritical.
4. Spending whatever he has out of his wealth in the cause of Allah i.e. in the fields of charity.
5. Being offensive to no one.
6. Causing no harm to others.

May God enable us to adopt these qualities that are necessary to make one a servant of God.
