Since moving to Melbourne I’ve mostly been at home so haven’t had a chance to make friends. 10 years ago I met someone who now lives here (we clicked immediately but then I moved to Japan) so I messaged her and organised a video brunch. It was really nice and now I have a friend!
At the beginning of the first lockdown, all the exiting plans I’d had for my new life here flew out the window. I slept and ate too much and fell into depression. It didn’t help that my usual coping strategies weren’t lockdown friendly. This time I’m doing better.
I found a therapist who helped get me back on track by setting achievable goals each day (turns out doing nothing makes you MORE depressed) and finding creative ways to still have a life in lockdown—like virtual brunch!
I’m also lucky to live with a wonderfully supportive partner and housemate and to get 10 subsidised therapy sessions a year via Medicare (ask your GP).
This pandemic SUCKS but don’t underestimate how much our brains can make it worse. If you’re feeling hopeless, reach out.
