All about tw and cw, a thread!
What does tw mean?

'TW' means Trigger Warning. A trigger typically refers to someone who has PTSD, but is now commonly used among many mentally ill people. It is a topic or idea that brings back traumatic memories, which would cause distress and discomfort
What does cw mean?

'CW' means Content Warning. It is used to give a heads up for what is in the following message or tweet. It lets the other person or audience in general know what's coming, so they are aware and prepared for what they are about to read
When should I use them?

Since the two tags have different meanings, they should be used differently. For example, a good thing to give a CW about is NSFW content. However, while triggers are vast and can be considered "strange", you should still respect them. -
When should I use them? (cont.)

NSFW would not typically be tagged as a trigger, but depending on the audience, one might want to. Something like a slur might warrant a content warning, where as something like physical abuse needs a trigger warning.
Final notes

All in all, what's important is to know your audience. If you know someone is upset by the mention of abuse, keep in mind you should not mention it, or at least tag it as a trigger. Warnings are very much appreciated, and should be used whenever necessary.
P.S.

Reminder not to censor any triggering words with symbols!! It will put it on people's timelines in the censored form, effectively blocking the "blacklist" or "muted" feature.
