ALRIGHT
Let's dig into the Grizzlies-Sixers scrimmage from today
Not expecting Jenkins to show too much of his bag here, but this design is nice. Morant curls off the Iverson screen and the weakside exchange with Jackson and Valanciunas pulls Embiid out of help position just long enough to force the foul on Richardson.
The length of the Sixers are obviously a horrible matchup for the Grizzlies, but I disagree with Jaren Jackson being assigned to guard Shake Milton. Puts him out on the perimeter guarding a primary ballhandler. Would rather him be on Tobias Harris and let Ja take Milton.
This is something we haven't seen a lot of from Ja Morant. Teams are going to maintain social distancing under his screens for the entirety of the restart until he shows he can hit this at a respectable rate. Even with the miss, his confidence to take this shot is encouraging.
Nice Pistol action variation here! Normally Tyus would run off Ja's pindown to take the DHO from Jaren but instead he turns around and sets a pindown FOR Morant, leaving Richardson behind the play. Haven't seen this from the Grizzlies before and I'm a fan of the play.
Brooks gets the ball off of Floppy. Simmons fronts Jackson in the high post as he flashes to the elbow and Brandon Clarke flashes to the nail. Clarke attempts to lob the ball over Simmons, who is on the wrong side of Jaren, but a bad pass leads to the turnover.
Feel like Brandon Clarke took a bad angle on the double here, leaving the weakside scrambling to cover all the shooters. On the other end, the Grizzlies just can't help themselves with the turnovers. Playing too fast and forcing things that aren't there, especially in transition.
Melton sets an early side ballscreen here so Richardson goes under, then JV immediately comes and sets an inside ballscreen, allowing Ja to turn the corner with Richardson on his hip. Sixers wall up the weakside very well, leaving no passing windows or shooting angles.
Poor PnR defense from Valanciunas, allowing Horford behind him in drop coverage. Morant recognizes this just in time to get a hand in there to make the layup more difficult and it leads to the fastbreak slam on the other end.
The Grizzlies ATTEMPT to run HORNS Flare here but... sheesh.
Most teams are probably going to guard Valanciunas in the post by bringing a double team like this and if he can continue to make terrific reads like this, that opens up a lot of opportunities for the Grizzlies.
In the first half, the Grizzlies were careless and sloppy. When they did get good looks, they didn't go down. Now that they've had time to adjust, the open looks are going down and the Grizzlies are running in transition without turning the ball over.
The defense in this third quarter has been a lot more active and has been executed well. Forcing the Sixers into tough shots has gotten the Grizzlies stops and enabled them to get out and run.
Tyus Jones in this game has been feeding weakside shooters based on which defender tags the roller first. A couple plays earlier he hit the corner shooter when the low man tags, now he hits Melton as Glenn Robinson tags Clarke at the nail.
Who does Tyus Jones pass to if nobody tags the roller, you may ask? Nice little pocket pass to Clarke at the dotted line leads to the nice floater.
This is simple yet incredible. Morant catching off of the curl attracts the attention of Glenn Robinson, allowing Kyle Anderson to simply step inbounds to get the open layup.
Encouraging stuff here from Dillon Brooks. Kyle O'Quinn allows Valanciunas to get behind him in drop coverage. Brooks reads this and throws an accurate lob for the highlight finish. Really nice pass, really nice finish.
Nothing else really notable to end this game. The Grizzlies were able to clean it up after a HORRENDOUS start to the game. Will be interesting to see if the better pattern can continue for the remainder of the scrimmages.
Taylor Jenkins threw in a couple new plays for people like me to feast on, but I'm not expecting to see any revolutionary new ATOs until a potential play-in series if at all. Never want to show your cards too early. Anyways, I'm out. Follow me @EricTweetsNBA.
