i think its redundant to say a character is fundamentally selfish bc we are all fundamentally selfish by nature. more than that, being "selfish" isnt an inherently bad thing and on top of that selfishness =/= passion.
language is a little bit funny. what does "selfish" really even mean? i think we all have a slightly different idea in our head of what it is.
while some parts of hinatas character i think could be attributed to an extreme /passion/, there are other times where he is kind for no reason other than kindness sake. "villager B is important too" "you always have the courage to give it your all" ...these are selfless words.
however, i think a bigger conversation could be had about the /limits/ of passion (or...hunger). what manifested in 365 begs one to ask questions about that.
its important to balance that extreme passion with self awareness, with resilience. hinata didnt need to hold back his passion after 365. he had to learn to be as passionate about taking care of himself, just as much as he was about playing the sport.
so to me the whole message of hinatas entire arc wasnt that being selfish (read: passionate) is a flaw to overcome, but that you have to stay balanced in your approach. hellooooo thats literally what ukai and kageyama point out. he learned to "balance" well on the sand? hello?
