Let’s talk about hoax

Here’s my personal interpretation I do believe this is one of the 3 songs about her relationship with Joe

“stood on the cliffside screaming, "give me a reason" your faithless love's the only hoax I believe in
don’t want no other shade of blue but you, no other sadness in the world would do”

these lyrics have multiple connections to lyrics from lover/reputation...

“Give me a reason” reminds me of dancing with our hands tied and the archer specifically the lyrics “You said there was nothing in the world that could stop it I had bad feeling” and “who could ever leave me darling? And who could stay...you could stay”

“your faithless love’s the only hoax I believe in” reminds me the lyrics “we still worship this love even if its a false god”

“don’t want not other shade of blue but you, no other sadness in the world would do” reminds me of “I want your dreary Monday blues”

“You know I left a part of me in New York” most of their time in secrecy was spent in London

“You knew the password so I let you in the door” has secret garden gate vibes from cruel summer and delicate “come here you can meet me in the back”

“you knew it still hurts underneath my scars from when they pulled me apart but what you did was just as dark” and “you have beaten my heart”

This is by far my far my favorite part of the song and think these lyric hold a deeper and darker meaning of their love story

Taylor is saying what he did was just as dark as what others did. He beat her heart by staying with her and loving her. She sees herself as rain even though she wants to be golden for him. She sees the drama that will haunt her and follow her everywhere

She believes joe choosing to stay after so many left (beating her heart) was the darkest thing anyone could do. It’s so poetically deep and beautiful and is easily one of the best songs she’s ever written
