every game dev has their little sins. for me it's that every single ascii background in meatpunks is all in one gigantic notepad doc. it's 3633 lines long and takes two minutes for the cursor to scroll from top to bottom. it's a nightmare and i wouldn't have it any other way
my setup is a lot more consistent these days -- every background is 30 rows x 90 columns, which fits perfectly into a 1920x1080 image. i use this black template text to make sure everything lines up properly

and then, once the ascii art is done, i paste the text into glimpse and add color, effects, etc
sometimes i make text changes directly in glimpse, like that mountain in the bg, to help with composition
