I honestly don't understand Bertholdt hate, he went through all the development Reiner and Eren went through in a shorter span and was the first character to embody the main message of the story, along with its counterpoint: Freedom, and how its robbed by war and dehumanizing
I could've phrased the final part better, so I will: Bertholdt understands that this war he's fighting was forced upon him by propaganda and dehumanizing the island Eldians, but comes around to see how not only Marley is mistaken in its dehumanizing, but how the humans inside 1/?
The walls also are guilty of dehumanizing the enemy in war, like how the scouts viewed Reiner and Bert before he broke down whilst Reiner was carrying them. At the end, he understands that there really are no good sides in war, just 2 societies being oppressed by human nature 2/?
And trying to survive. His talk with Armin in RtS shows this, as that's where most his development happens, as well as where its showcased. He recognizes Armin and the rest of the scouts as his comrades, but understands that he's too deep into the he'll called war to make 3/?
Hell*
A meaningful change, so he plays his pant in the war against the wall eldians, despite his connections to them. He doesn't do it out of spite or duty, but out of understanding that he's beyond redemption, and that if he wants to make amends, he either has to die or do 4/?
What he came to the island to do until the bitter end, despite how much it would hurt him. In the end, he dies, the same way all those people in Shiganshina did, eaten alive by a titan. And by that point, he fully understands what he did and despite crying out for help from 5/?
Ex comrades, he knows he deserved his death because there is no taking back what he did. So after fully grasping the horrors of war, the awful nature of dehumanizing in war and how he carries out what he must despite knowing he is in the wrong, I don't see how anyone can hate him
