There's not many experiences that can compare to the realization that you're listening to a legendary project. It's indescribable.
It makes you so privileged to be alive at a time when all of this classic music is coming out. You can tell your kids the story of when you listened to Bandana for the first time or the time you realized that To Pimp A Butterfly was going to go down as a legendary piece of art.
It's reminds you of how your music tastes formed. Like, for me, it formed from my parents listening to old R&B music on the radio and my brother and I watching MTV when we were kids. ALL of those 16 years of music being a huge part of your life have brought you to this.
It's not just that, either. It's 24 years of life experience that have an impact as well. For example, because of the things I've been through, I'm kind of a dark person, so I gravitate towards depressing music. I know that's kind of weird, but it's just the way that I am.
So when projects like Manic and Folklore come out, they make you feel seen. It feels like your entire life are in those projects. THAT is what music is all about. When you're going through shit, deeply personal music can help you deal with it.
I'm just one person, though. There are MILLIONS of people around the world who feel the exactly same way I feel towards music. It has made like so much easier to live and it has really changed my life for the better.
For example, TONYA by Brockhampton is one of my favorite songs ever because it is basically my entire life. Regrets about not being with family enough, feeling like you don't matter anymore, just wanting to go back to a time where you were innocent, etc.
If you listen to Brockhampton, you know that they have made their fair share of songs that hit deep, but TONYA is THE one for me. It makes me feel something that most songs don't.
Folklore really makes you think about your love of music and put your entire musical life into perspective. It's crazy how certain projects can do that to a person.
This thread was really scatter-brained, but this is how I genuinely feel at the moment. Folklore is probably the album of the year for me right now, and I don't see anything topping it.
