Today was my last day at Harmonix! Off to a new adventure.
Here are my #4Games, all Harmonix titles!
Harmonix was my first studio, and I will always have a fondness for it. But it certainly had its problems. The commitment to allyship and accessibility was all talk, at least to the people who had the power to change things. There is no diversity in the management.
I dealt with sexism and queerphobia. I was burnt out within six months because I spent all my time attempting to communicate with the 40+ year old (most white) men that were my direct peers and colleagues. I should have been doing cool research but I was too tired.
Most of the Fuser team has been crunching for months. QA is working 70+ hour weeks right now. One employee spent a week crunching without power, using a generator to keep working. I truly believe it's just a few bad apples, but they are spoiling so much.
Still, it was my first studio and I will always look back on it with fondness. I love so many of the people there, and they are incredibly talented. Please still play our games because we worked hard on them. I'm so stoked for the Fuser launch this year.
Love you, Harmonix. Please be bold and make the changes needed so your younger workforce will thrive. I promise your games will be all the better for it.
Fwiw I may end up deleting this later. I don't want to cause trouble for the studio or my friends. The only way we are going to grow as as an industry is if we talk about our problems, and those are uncomfortable situations. Use the chance to move forward.
