I'm here for the @nberpubs summer institute #Gender line up of exciting 8 egg-timer presentations on #Violence & #COVID19

👇🏽

Watch livestream:

Program: http://conference.nber.org/sched/SI20GE
First up, @heidistoeckl of @SaME_LSHTM on integrating #IPV measures into ongoing cohort in #Mwanza, great discussion on ethics & decisions to collect data during this time [data collection ongoing] 2/n
Next up, Amelia Miller @UniversityofV summarizes early evidence from US data, nice discussion of why DV might actually decrease during #COVID19 & importance of digging into these trade offs 3/n
Third, moving to #Chile, examining "rolling quarantines" [cool!] initial spike in calls to nat hotline [~200% higher] - presented by Damian Clarke [ @udechile] 4/n
Interestingly, usage of women's shelters also has increased - lots of exciting follow-up, including attempts to break apart mechanisms & plans to re-interview panel of women in pre-COVID nationally-rep data 5/n
Fourth up, @brittanyrstreet gives us an overview of deep dive into US impacts leveraging a *ton* of different rich data sources - looking at both survivors & perpetrators, co-habitation histories & economic factors

w/ Finlay & Mueller-Smith 6/n
Super exciting project, basically the type of data you only dream of in LICs! 7/n
We're back w/Erica Field talking about new follow-up data collection in #Peru of 1000 at-risk women with Peruvian Ministry of Women to allow changes in reported #IPV over up to 10 yrs. w/ @taitarasu et al.

8/n
That study still waiting IRB approval, but in the meantime survey of men in another ongoing trial [via phone] & use of algorithm estimates to see what factors predict reporting of IPV [men under-report]

9/n
Back to the #US w/ @causalinf using 911 calls identifying DV & child abuse calls @ census track level - DID w/both shelter in place & school closures

[results not shared as preliminary], but lots of next steps 👇🏽 10/n
. @Manisha_econ & S. Baird on possible impacts for #adolescents in LMICs [ #Ethiopia, #Jordan & #Bangladesh] - RQ on prevalence, mechanisms, long-run impacts & heterogeneities 11/n
In these settings, research team did not feel comfortable asking direct #VAC questions, but used a number of alternatives, including vignettes

@GAGE_programme questionnaire here: https://www.gage.odi.org/publication/gage-virtual-research-toolkit-qualitative-research-with-young-people-on-their-covid-19-experiences/ 12/n
Descriptive results so far indicate high levels of #violence for older adolescent girls from vignettes & substantial increases [ranging from 37 Bangladesh Cox Bazar - 70% Ethiopia] alongside numerous risk factors 13/n
Last up, back to the #US Silvia Prina speaks about work leveraging state-level variation in shelter-in-place + google search & police data @BilgeErten @pinarandmore

~10 papers out/ongoing w/ data from US, will be interesting to see how they align/contrast across sources! 14/n
Lots of innovation going on! Questions around whether or not #violence changed during #COVID19 certainly interesting . . .

But more excited about seeing how papers develop to give hints / evidence / actionable solutions around what can decrease risk of violence! end/
