When I was a math teacher, ratios were difficult for students to grasp. One tactic which helped was to center content around one's neighborhood. One of the assignments was comparing movie theaters, grocery & liquor stores to the number of children in a community.
As a W7 resident, it makes sense that I use W7 data. Let's skip movie theaters since W7 has none. Plus we can't attend due to the pandemic anyway.

So on to grocery stores. Here we go...
W7 has about 21K children ages 0-17.
W7 has two grocery stores.

Safeway322 40TH ST NE
Safeway2845 ALABAMA AVE SE

This means the ration of children to grocery stores is about one grocery store for about 10.5K students.
Since I am a W8 school leader, I'll share that those numbers too:

number of children = 23k
number of grocery stores = 1 (one) Giant 1535 ALABAMA AVE SE

(So in a complete sentence because writing in math is important.)

Ward 8 has one grocery store for all 23k children.
So then I read the news about the new W1 grocery store (Whole Foods). So I was curious about the ratios. https://twitter.com/MayorBowser/status/1286452663224274944?s=20
Ward 1 has about 13.5K children 0-17 years old.
Ward 1 now has 12 grocery stores.
This means the ratio is about one to 1,125 children.
I am sure one or two of these may close since the list I pulled from 2018.

Because this is a long thread. I'll recap the numbers.
For every grocery store, there is X number of children in that Ward.

1,125 for Ward 1
11,500 for Ward 7
23,472 for Ward 8
Simple math. Ratios are easy...but that not the point. Once my students got to this point. Every year, a student would blurt out "Mr. Weeden, that's f*cked up! How come, they get everything?"
After I redirected the class from the outburst and a quick apology from the student. I spent the rest of the class talking about systemic racism and its impact on the Black community.
I LOVE the District and my parents taught me that we show what we deem to be important by our actions.
Anyone want to do the ratio of liquor stores?
