Short corporate COVID response story. My mother (she's 75 years old) works for a large company. Due to her high-risk status, she was sent home by her company at the start of the pandemic. They told her "just go home, everything will be taken care of."
The company has been paying my mother, providing her full benefits, literally no change to her compensation and NOT REQUIRING HER TO WORK. They decided the stress of the world + her age warranted this kind of action.
The owner of the company told the full staff team a week ago that the health of the company is strong. That they have been saving money due to the office being closed and that no one will be laid off or have any benefits changed as they move through this time.
Today my mother got an envelope in the mail from the company - it had a single thing in it, a #BlackLivesMatter bracelet. They sent one to the home of every single employee.
My Mom has stayed working because frankly, she loves it, she's still hella vibrant and extremely good at her job. It has been revelatory to see how she is being treated at a time that so many companies are doing the opposite. Clearly choices from the top are being done with care.
Side note: Mom also let me know she called several of her white co-workers to make sure they got a bracelet too. Which cracked me up. Anyway - just sharing this story because it is a positive one. They are so rare RN especially when a company and a 75 yo Black Woman are involved.
A lot of folks are asking who my Mom works for, I won't be sharing in order to respect her privacy and because lamentably I am a target #onhere and don't want anyone bothering my Mama.
