Okay, so, the embargo has lifted, so here are my thoughts on the Crash 4 demo. I’ve actually had access to it for over a week. I’m a good secret-keeper. Get ready for a thread.

VISUALS: gorgeous. Even though it’s in beta, it ran at 60fps pretty consistently.
MUSIC: good shit. I only had 3 songs to go by and they haven’t really nailed themselves into my head, but they fit the stages really well. Not my favourite, but really good.
CONTROLS: smooth as butter. Weight feels solid, and the run/jump combo across multiple pits feels natural. Double jump rocks. Only sticking point for me is the slide jump - it sucks. You lose all your momentum whenever you do it, so all you get is height, barely any distance.
GAMEPLAY: this is an interesting beast. The classic crash platforming, enemy spinning and box breaking is there - but on a HUGE scale. Levels are much wider and explorative, and still linear. Chases are epic. Loads of secrets. Great box platforming puzzles.....
.....then you get the masks. In my opinion, they’re the fresh zest the series needed, while staying true to Crash’s roots and not overtaking. They’re situational as hell, but they spice up the levels in different ways JUST enough to make this game stand out.....
.....it’s also pretty challenging. Like, fucking challenging. Never unfair, but you find yourself doing classic Crash platforming in new level designs, while multitasking mask abilities. Always engaging. I like the challenge. And there’s different difficulties, so have at it.....
.....as for Cortex, I think he’s great. His dash has a flutter at the end so you never overshoot jumps, and he turns any enemy into rocks or bouncy cube. Great platforming puzzles. Shooting on side scrolling parts is a pain (if you aren’t facing directly left or right, you miss).
Overall, I’m impressed. It’s just different enough to keep me engaged and curious, and just similar enough to make me feel right at home. No clue about bosses or powerups, but if this small tiny portion is any indication, we’ve got good shit coming.
