IMPORTANT. Several lessons in this. Please read fully.
A video (in Tamil) of a child pleading with his mother that he would do the homework the next day is doing the rounds in WhatsApp. TV channels have also picked up the video 1/6
This video is going viral on social media, especially WhatsApp.
The problem with WhatsApp, as I have been repeatedly saying, is that your phone number goes out everywhere in all groups. There is no privacy. 2/6
Now, the serious part.
A caller, which @Truecaller identifies as Police Iman', identifies himself as an 'advocate of a child welfare body', is calling and threatening those who are forwarding the video. 3/6
He says it is a child abuse video and threatens the person he will take action against him. He calls up women and threatens them.
Is it possible for the police or advocate to 'take action' against one person, when he is only sharing a video that has gone viral? 4/6
There are lessons here.
Our obsession with WhatsApp, where we share everything - along with our phone number to multiple WhatsApp groups - must stop.
We don't realise that our phone numbers are out in the open in multiple groups. 5/6
I know women who have received calls from random people.
Get out of WhatsApp groups. Stop sharing everything.
Use apps similar to WhatsApp like @telegram that don't share phone numbers to all and sundry. 6/6
