Thread On Diontae Johnson’s 2019 Season:
59 Receptions, 92 Targets, 680 Yards, 5 TD’s, 64.1 Catch %, 1st in Target Separation, 1st in Forced Missed Tackles.
The first thing I noticed was his game-breaking acceleration. He just blows past defenders and wastes no time going from 0-100.
Now obviously, he is an elite route runner, already. He sells the fade route and breaks toward the corner creating just enough separation to make the tough TD grab.
Here he is again showing off his speed and agility in open space. The defenders didn’t have a chance.
Another example of him going 0-100 in the blink of an eye. Defender had good technique, too. Just got blown by.
Perfect use of his hands at the line and gets overtop one of the best CB’s in the league in Peters.
I’ve talked about his elite route running, but after the catch, he’s near impossible to bring down. One of the better receivers in the league in open space in only his first year in the NFL..
Two positives, one negative. He wins off the line against arguably the best corner in the league.. incredible. It takes three guys to bring him down, but unfortunately the downside of being tough to tackle and always wanting to make a play is fumbling. He learned from it though.
This is just picture perfect. He sells the inside with his first step, and all the way down the field. As soon as he turns the safeties hips, he breaks it outside within a second. This will make him one of the hardest WR’s to cover.
I mean.. no words. He should be utilized more like this.
My favorite play from his season. Just watch the defenders try to tackle air.
How are you supposed to cover this? Quick stutter step at the LOS, gets outside leverage, fakes inside leverage just to break back out and maxmize his separation..
Out & Up concept, tracks the ball and makes a difficult catch. There’s not much this kid can’t do..
Summary:

He is special. Really special. In my opinion, the best WR on the Steelers. He’s got elite route running, high end speed, game changing ability in the open space, he will be a Top 10 receiver in the league with significantly better QB play in 2020.
There’s not much he needs to improve on. He could be a bit more physical, and I noticed he lacked some effort in run blocking but I’m sure it’ll be fixed in Pitt. I’m looking forward to watching his career, he is polarizing. https://twitter.com/lock2sutton/status/1271844677805891584
