Thread...Last day of my joint stint at NHS Test and Trace and @leedscc_news. Big challenge and huge thanks to both of the great teams. Nice time to return with the city approaching #peakleeds with @lufc back in the promised land!
2. Delighted that the excellent @CWilkinsOldham is taking on the national role. Just what we need and she will be brilliant.
So many families have lost loved ones & deep condolences go out to everyone affected. Any way we can stop spread of virus saves lives. Washing hands, keeping distance, wearing masks, getting tested & self isolating with symptoms, & sharing contacts if positive saves lives.
Need strongest national & local partnership to succeed. Local communities, stakeholders & councils know how to tackle problems quickly, led by local public health professionals. Contain framework empowers local councils to act swiftly with support from Government when needed.
NHS Test & Trace up & running at scale with almost 200k people reached to self isolate & save lives. Thank you to them. Without a vaccine and treatment, this is best chance of returning close to normal life. 80% contacts reached isn’t bad & can be improved by use of local teams
Brilliant health protection & public health teams working every day to contain outbreaks. Data now available to those local teams, £300m of funding allocated and DPHs delviering a “whole place” response via local outbreak plans. Excellent leadership from @adph and @lgacomms
We know we need to get ready for 2nd wave. We need to win 150 or so local battles to contain it. That will mean really strong engagement with communities so they are confident in what’s happening & can help contain it. And the closest NHS and local govt working we’ve ever had.
Care homes, home care, NHS & vulnerable people all need protecting. We need to equip local & national decision makers with data, resources & powers to respond swiftly if the virus spreads. Traditional institutional barriers to working together have got to be rendered irrelevant
9. We’ve got to listen to those disproportionately affected, and work with them to act. Our BAME friends & colleagues need to be at heart of that response so we save more lives. We need to hear voices of people with learning disabilities, care leavers & homeless and help them.
It’s been a long haul already for those at front line & key leaders like DPHs. They need our understanding, kindness & support. Somehow they need a break before more tough times ahead. I hope they get that & more practitioners can help develop national policy. It’s not over.
