Knife sets are a scam. You get better value buying piecemeal, and spending more on the specific knives where it matters. Here& #39;s what I have. /1
First, my favorite knife: the Global GS-89 5" chef& #39;s knife. Not a typical size, but I& #39;ve found it much more versatile than 6-8", esp in limited counter space. Plus since these are all-metal, if you& #39;re careful you can throw them in the dishwasher. /2

For the standard 8" chef& #39;s knife, I have a Mac MTH-80. The handle& #39;s wood so it& #39;s hand-wash only, but sometimes you just need a big sharp knife, and this one is awesome. /3

Little paring knives are very useful, so you& #39;ll want a few. This one is cheap and good. /4

Bread needs cutting. You need a big serrated knife. You don& #39;t need a fancy one. Unfortunately, the one I have is no longer made, so I have to punt here - we& #39;ll go Victorinox again. /5

TBH you could stop there. That& #39;s really the core of a knife set. But there& #39;s a couple more I really like. First is a santoku. Want a knife that can spread the mayo AND cut the sandwich? Here you go. I& #39;m sure it has other uses too. /6

And finally a smaller serrated. Necessary? Probably not. But this one feels better for cutting not-bread than the big bread one. /7

Don& #39;t forget a sharpener. People with finesse use steels. I am not one of them. I use this. Most pull-through sharpeners aren& #39;t the right angle for the knives I listed above, but this one you can adjust. /8

BONUS ROUND: kitchen shears. Super useful. Get some. You& #39;ll see. /end
