This video makes me upset. But it& #39;s worth examining a bit. The main thing I want to note in this moment is that this person doesn& #39;t want to have a "rational discussion" about any of this. People who talk about "debating" these issues can& #39;t explain what& #39;s supposed to happen if we do debate. They& #39;re gonna dismiss everything you say. And then what? Or maybe you convince them. And then what? It doesn& #39;t have anything to do with action.
Men like this have the audacity to tell is that our time and energy should be spent on them when they have no intention of *doing* anything. It& #39;s not gonna make them protest. They& #39;re not gonna vote against their interests. It& #39;s useless. It& #39;s a fool& #39;s errand to "debate" them.
The very best thing to do in response to men like this is if it& #39;s them. Save your time. Save your anger. Do not debate them. Continue to use your voice and your power to change things around them until they find themselves obsoleted. Then don& #39;t work with them.
That was supposed to be "ignore them". Tweeting too hard today.
The thing that makes me angry is that I admit I have a hard time ignoring them. I’m sure many of us do. It is important to feel that your anger and pain is being seen and validated. And men like this are fucking *experts* at being condescending and making people feel dismissed.
I believe that we should continue to build coalition with each other. I’m not saying everybody who is still problematic today is a lost cost. But engaging with men like this isn’t worth it. They will steal your energy and leave you with nothing left for the fight that matters.
Not everybody can be brought along with us towards something better. Some people need to get left behind. They can decide to change themselves at any time. But it probably won’t happen until they are forced to accept that world just doesn’t have to eat shit from them anymore.
