Just reflecting on the colonial reality that the telephone was invented in Haudenosaunee territory, that one of the first languages spoken over the telephone was Kanien'kéha and here we are in 2020 and our kids at Six Nations won't have adequate internet to homeschool this fall
Chiefswood (National Historic Site) was built in 1856. This house still stands at Six Nations. It is 17km from the Bell Homestead, which on the banks of the Grand River, in the Haldimand Tract. Alexander Graham Bell patented the telephone in 1876!
How can hybrid models of school delivery be viable when half the time texts don't send on half the rez? We can barely make phone calls let alone stream video. We have 14k people on our rez in Southern Ontario, how will our children be protected? How will our languages be taught?
Haud communities are located near some of the hardest hit areas for covid-19 in Ontario/Quebec/NY state. Our communities have some of the highest # of reported cases amongst FNs, including 8 new cases yesterday in Akwesasne. We need to make learning at home viaible this fall
