hackathons are, imo, shitty environments for women/URMs

everyone talks a lot ab diversity efforts in tech but nothing will change till we stop emphasizing the need to hack together a side project in 48 hrs while sacrificing sleep and surviving on Red Bull
to clarify I think side projects are super valuable but there’s no need to put so much emphasis on doing it over 48 hrs (not that healthy, + the typical hacker gives off “I know everything ab coding” vibe which can prevent many women/URM from showing up)
I’m excited to see more companies put emphasis on week long / month long “hackathons”

a good amt of time to build something might help women/URMs gain the confidence they need that they are capable of learning new skills required to hack something together
