Just finished a 15h shift. Straight out of the door this morning single crewed to a diary apt. 8 years worth of DA disclosed with who knows how many incidents. 5 hour statement taken, statements from family members, risk assessments made, safeguarding. 9 hours at the address. 1/?
Meanwhile my colleagues had been tasked with finding suspect as soon as I had confirmed offences. 30mins later 1 in custody. Victim cried when I told her. Anyway back to the nick I go. Crime report created, statements uploaded, countless screenshots and voicemails uploaded. 2/?
Risk assessments approved and copied up onto crime report, Op-Info put on address, child protection referrals made, BWV uploaded. He was just being interviewed as I left. I hope they get a good result... I’m mentally drained 3/?
made my heart sink when the lovely little 3YO girl said out of nowhere that she didn’t want to see daddy anymore because he’s a nasty man, and that he’s not her dad anymore. Went from terrified of me when I arrived to playing with me by the time I left. She was drained too... 4/4
Just realised all I’ve eaten today is a croissant. Maccies it is 👍🏻
Blimey, this has snowballed a bit, hasn’t it? I only wanted to offload a bit because my girlfriend and family were asleep by the time I finished! Thank you all for the kind comments, I can’t possibly reply to you all but here’s a bit of a FAQ:
1. I fell asleep on the sofa, was woken up by the dog at 03:00, then up at 05:15 to book on at 07:00 this morning.
2. I did get a pat on the back from my inspector, my normal Sgt, current attachment Sgt, and response Sgt who asked me to cover the diary calls, as did my colleagues
3. ABE perhaps would have been better suited, but I admit I didn’t think of it and went with management recommendation
4. I followed up this morning and all of the support systems and referrals are in place and they have been in contact.
5. Yes that really is how much work is required just to get to the point of being able to hand over to the team that interview and investigate, and put in initial safeguarding
6. Yes I did enjoy my McDonald’s, but I was too full of double cheeseburger, chicken selects, fries, and milkshake for a McFlurry!
In reality it wasn’t anything exceptional on my part and there were parts I could have done better. On the whole I’m happy enough with how it went considering I haven’t been near a DA since I was tutored 9 months ago, and never done one on my own, or dealt with one so big
The victim was grateful and visibly lighter when I left. She thanked me and asked how long I’d been in the police but she wouldn’t believe when I said a year and a day! Time for me to move on, but I hope they get help and a good result.
