on the morning of july 18th garifuna leader Snider Centeno and three other leaders of the Triunfo de la Cruz community were kidnapped and dissapeared by a group of men wearing bulletproof vests

Snider was the president of the elected community council in Triunfo de la Cruz and his community reacived a favorable sentence from the inter-american comission in human rights on 2015. However the honduran state has still not respected it.

in 2015, the interamerican court of human rights sentenced the state of Honduras for violating the human rights of the garinagu (garifuna) of Triunfo de la Cruz

they ordered the state to make preparations for the harms they had commited and to return land they had stole and were exploiting with absolute disregard for the community and the environment.

However the state of Honduras continues to harm and kill members of the community.

Antonio Bernandez was a 71 year old Garifuna defender from the Punta Piedra community (303km / 1882 miles away) he was murdered last month. This community has suffered ever since 1992 with invasions of their land. they were also involved in the 2015 case.

the assasination of antonio Bernandez is a reflection of the conditions of social exclusion and a lack of access to justice in which the garinagu in Honduras have been living and continue to live in.

the kidnapping and dissapearance of Snider and atleast 3 other men is another attack against the garifuna community and their struggle to protect ancestral lands and the rights of afro-indigenous indigeonous people to live.
