Reading update: right in the beginning (kinda) there is a paragraph about how the MC is looking at the exiles (essentially black people). She’s noting similarities in appearance and that she could very well be looking at family but she does claim them and they don’t claim her.-

And I had to pause because holy shit. This commentary is LAYERED. On the surface it can viewed as her simply never interacting with her unknown father’s side of the fam/not knowing anything because her mom is gone and her fam is tight lipped about anything but religion. But-

It goes deeper than that. We are talking about class. We are talking about inner community politics. Do you speak the same? Think the same? Is THAT what makes you family or is it something else. These are present world problems as well in and out of the black community.

I’m shook. I’m fucking shook. In one paragraph Alex Henderson said SO MUCH and I do not want anyone to gloss over that. We stan. Okay back to reading.

I forgot to mention that the theme of womanhood and what it means to be a woman is so great in this book. Like what IS it? People always talk about it but wtf does it mean in reality.

I’m so excited to read more about how Immanuelle figures that out for herself.
