The year is 1848 and the Boers have been moving north for almost 200 years.. They have finally made contact with VhaVenḓa.. Their most North town is Called Schoemansdal and trade between the two was going well.. Elephant tusks, leopard skins traded for gold.. #Vendatwitter
By 1856 the Boers have increased in numbers.. King Makhado is starting to worry about them coming in and demanding more land.. By 1858 they now wanted venda people to work for them for free.. Including Prince & Princesses.. Their numbers grow but so does trade #Vendatwitter
By 1860 the Boers asked King Makhado to tell them where his land started & where it ends & also to let them count the people under his kingdom.. King Makhado replied by saying "Only I know where my kingdom starts & end, & my people will not be counted like sheep" #Vendatwitter
King Makhado told the Boers to leave his land. This angered the Boers who called pretoria for back up. Pretoria sent 400 commandos lead by general Paul Kruger. His mission was to remove Makhado as king and rule his lands.Paul Kruger later became a hero of the Boers #Vendatwitter
One day Makhado commander visited his relative who was working at Schoemansdal.. He witnessed how Venda people were being mistreated and abused by the Boers.. He rushed to tell Makhado about what he saw... Makhado was angry.. #Vendatwitter
The following day, 13 July 1867, the drum was beaten and Venda soldiers assembled for the attack. They went down and killed everybody who was there. The only survivors were two hunters who had gone out on a hunt. They ran south & got help to come & claim their dead #Vendatwitter
The bodies of all the Boers who were killed were taken away to a safe place for the Boers to come & look for their dead relatives. The town was named Soekmekaar which means looking for one another because that's where they went to look for their loved ones. The town exists today
The loss of Schoemansdal meant pretoria had lost its control over Venda.. So the Boers retreated and settled at marabastad outside polokwane and later they settled in polokwane.. They later tried by all means to take venda from its rules but to no avail #Vendatwitter
The settlers later joined forces with Tsonga people behind a Portuguese man called Joao Albasini to try & take over Venda but the Venda armies & fight tactics were too advanced which was a surprise to them. Albasini was friends to the Tsonga people & trained then & gave them guns
Tsonga people loved Albasini so much that they gave him land to become a chief.. The area was called Albasini village which was later changed to Valdesia after Albasini death.. #Vendatwitter
Makhado was visited by a British general from Zimbabwe who start teach Makhado how to build a fortified kingdom & to defend against attacks.. This angered the Boers in pretoria who sent general Joubert to convince Makhado to stop talking to the Brits. Makhado denied #Vendatwitter
The Boers convinced those close to Makhado that he was the source of the conflict between VhaVenḓa & Boers & had to be killed. Makhado’s first wife Nwaphunga with Rasivhetshele, Makhokha, Makhethekhethe & Mutheiwana planned the assassination of Makhado.  #Vendatwitter
Makhado loved Brandy, and he was given poisoned brandy by Rasivhetshele and Nwaphunga at a party specifically arranged by Nwaphunga. King Makhado died on 3 September 1895. Venḓa people called him Tshilwavhusiku tsha ha Ramabulana, the Boers called him The lion of the north. Ndaa
