In 2016, only a few months before the LACCD Board of Trustees vote, the Broadcasting Program petitioned the college to separate from the Media Arts Dept and rejoin Communications to better serve students. This was ultimately blocked.

The Photography Department Viability study revealed questions regarding the need for a multi-million dollar complex considering it's performance.

There were 17 Media Arts AA Degrees awarded 2016 - 2017 School year (none in Cinema).

Enrollment data showed that all LAVC Media Arts classes on average perform below LAVC class enrollment standards.

In June 2020, LA Valley Star (LAVC student newspaper) revealed that the way they were able to extend time for project completion due to Covid-19 outbreak was due to the Capstone class only having 10 students in it.

Further a great deal of enrollment and student success was heavily dependent on a Grant from the State that college had operated for several years under Dan Watanabe's direction.

After several years of supposed success, the Grant's renewal was denied in 2018.

Valley College Academic Center construction was approved $11.5 million over budget when multiple programs were bordering on non-viability and has now failed to two deadlines for completion.
