So here's the problem I have with the WE "scandal." First of all, the media got in a froth claiming that it was a conflict of interest because the PM's wife had done a podcast for WE.
Then there was an allegation that there was a conflict of interest because the PM is friends with the people who run the charity.
None of that flew too far so then there were allegations made that WE wasn't going to pay minimum wage to the volunteer students as if that was somehow scandalous.
Then the media jumped on the fact that the PM's mother had been a speaker at WE events for years before the PM became PM, so somehow this was a benefit to his family for WE to get the contract.I have to say, that one was a real stretch.
The conflict of interest rules restrain a lot of behaviour but they do not require a politician to police their parents' past paid speaking engagements. Nor was there anything out of whack with what Margaret Trudeau was paid for the work she provided.
The fact that his brother both spoke at and was paid for past speaking engagements for WE was once again enough to send the media and the opposition into paroxysms of criticism.
I heard Robert Fife on CFRA imply that the PM was receiving a personal benefit from all of this and that if he denied it well, he lied about everything anyway so why should we believe him. Seriously?
But apparently this so-called scandal wasn't receiving enough traction, so now WE became the object of over-the-top, inflated allegations. It was alleged that they were the recipient of a 900 million-dollar contract because of their ties to the Trudeau family.
The fact that this was programming money that would go mostly to students, and that WE would be receiving a 2% administrative fee out of that, comparable to other similar transfer programs, and maybe a little less, wasn't mentioned at all.
Instead, CBC Radio found one member of the Youth Advisory Council to interview. That person's comments, that the PM was saying the right things about youth engagement but that he wanted to see more action was spun into a criticism that the PM was talking but not doing anything.
Seriously? that is our public broadcaster. We have to be able to rely on the CBC for fair and balanced coverage because we don't get it elsewhere. But we didn't get it this time either.
WE has a for-profit section, which is the one that is supposed to pay the speakers because those big WE events are for profit. It turned out that in error, the charity had paid Margaret Trudeau instead. The funds were immediately paid back.
But instead of reporting that there was an error, the media reported that WE, the charity, had lied about not paying any funds to Margaret Trudeau.
And now we have Jagmeet Singh alleging that there was a 900 million dollar contract awarded to WE so that the PM could help his well-off friends. He's actually used the word corruption. Seriously?
And today I read that the media has decided to look into WE's real estate holdings, which have absolutely nothing to do with any of this whatsoever.
WE may be a horrible organization for all I know. The point is, I don't know, and the media has done absolutely nothing to educate me.
The media went so far as to be critical of the programs that WE had in mind, suggesting that having student volunteers make face masks or come up with exercise videos for housebound seniors were not real world experiences that would help them find work. Seriously?
So at the end of all of this, I have to say that the whole thing looks totally cooked up. All I have seen the media do is parrot opposition talking points and give them a credibility I don't see.
The public service says that they were the ones who put forward WE for this program because WE was better suited than the public service was to implement it.
The Clerk of the Privy Council office today testified that there was absolutely no evidence of the Prime Minister being aware of this recommendation or being involved in it prior to when it went to Cabinet.
He also indicated it never occurred to him that the PM should recuse himself because his family's involvement with WE was so well-known and public.
I understand the opposition's desire to try to persuade the public that this is so scandalous that they should form the next government. But there is no excuse for the media jumping on this bandwagon. The public has not been well served by the biased reporting on this issue.
