When people say Louisiana Hoodoo is Haitian Vodou they are leaving the part at that the Haitians that dealt with and helped build Louisiana were more closely related to the indigenous parts of LA. It was the black Natives that added to it. And at that time it wasn't voodoo
That early in history, it was the alliance of native tribes that mixed their native practices together. The Zemi came before the veve. Louisiana Hoodoo without Hollywood's influence can exist without the aspects of Haitian Vodou. Why? Because it is its own practice
Fact: Today's Haitian voodoo is far removed from the Haitian voodoo of old. Louisiana Hoodoo deities like the lwa of luck (Common in Mississippi Valley Hoodoo) and Blan Dani are absent in Haitian voodoo but very present in LA Hoodoo
The first Haitian (as in a native to the land and also a product of the revolution) to directly influence Louisiana culture was Mambo Sanite Dede. Her works were considered to be more "Kabbalah" based. It was the land of Louisiana that birthed the phenomena of synchronicity
The truth is the first Haitians that came to Louisiana left behind pieces of their language and their bloodline(marriages and such) but NEW traditions were created in Louisiana for the purpose to make LA its own nation. This fact is further backed by LA's slaveholding laws
As in you couldn't mistreat your slaves. You couldn't harm your slaves. Delphine lost all her slaves after her treatment was discovered and had her brother buy then back for her.
Because of the early union, Louisiana Creole folk have access to the Haitian lwa but STILL Louisiana has lwa that Haitians have never heard of or met. One of my favorite hoodoo deities is the lwa Samunga. Doesn't exist in Haiti or Africa.
