1920: An investigation into the NYT's coverage of the Russian revolution found that stories were not based on facts, but "were determined by the hopes of the men who made up the news organisations." They reported over 91 times the Bolshevik regime was about to collapse.
1999: A Dept of Energy official leaked the name of a suspect in the Los Alamos document theft incident to the NYT, and they published it, leading to the creation of the NNSA (National Nuclear Security Adminstration).

The 1619 project by @nhannahjones is so inaccurate and false, twelve historians wrote to the NYT to express their deep concerns with it. The NYT has only published one response, and they have not discontinued the project. https://historynewsnetwork.org/article/174140
In 2002, Nicholas Kristof wrote a series of columns suggesting Dr. Steven Hatfill might be a "likely culprit" in the anthrax attacks. He was never charged with any crime. In 2004, he sued NYT & Kristof for libel, claiming defamation & intentional infliction of emotional distress.
In 2003 NYT admitted Jayson Blair committed repeated journalistic fraud over a span of several years. The top two editors â Howell Raines, the executive editor, and Gerald M. Boyd, managing editor â resigned their posts following the incident.
Judith Miller wrote a series of prominent articles "strongly suggesting Saddam Hussein already had or was acquiring an arsenal of weapons of mass destruction" using Ahmad Chalabi as her source prior to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. This aided the Bush admin make the case for war.
Oct 2005, Judith Miller was released from prison after 85 days, when she agreed to testify after receiving a personal waiver, both on the phone and in writing, of her earlier confidential source agreement with Lewis "Scooter" Libby.
No other reporter whose testimony had been sought in the case received direct and particularized release. Her incarceration helped fuel an effort in Congress to enact a federal shield law which protect reporters in 31/50 states. . Miller resigned from the paper on 11/9/05.
In March 2005, CampusJ broke the story that The New York Times had negotiated a deal with Columbia University administrators to exclude student response in an article on academic bias in exchange for exclusive access to a report.
6/23/06 The Times revealed the existence of the Terrorist Finance Tracking Program, a CIA/Department of Treasury scheme to access transactional database of the Brussels-based Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication ("SWIFT").
In September 2006, the Belgian government declared that the SWIFT dealings with U.S. government authorities were, in fact, a breach of Belgian and European privacy laws.
On 12/22/06 at the request of the Bush Administration, they removed sections of an Op-Ed piece critical of the administration's policy towards Iran which contained info that Iran cooperated after the 9/11 attacks and offered to negotiate a diplomatic settlement in 2003.
9/10/07 Times ran a full-page ad for http://MoveOn.org on the integrity of Gen. David Petraeus, commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, entitled "General Petraeus or General Betray Us?" They charged MoveOn $65k for an ad that costs around $182k (64% off). NYT declined to explain.
Alessandra Stanley, a tv critic has complaints raised on the accuracy of her reporting. Her tribute to Walter Cronkite on 7/18/09 had eight factual errors. The correction:
NYT coverage of India has been criticized by Sumit Ganguly for its "hectoring" & "patronizing" tone towards India. Anti-India bias in coverage of Kashmir Conflict, the Hyde Act & other India-related matters.
March 2019, NYT received sharp criticism when it referred to Pulwama suicide bombing, which was carried out by the Pakistani terrorist outfit JeM, as an "explosion". The headline of the article read "In India's Election Season, an Explosion Interrupts Modi's Slump."
Caliphate, a podcast NYT faced criticism after Abu Huzaifa al-Kanadi admitted on the podcast that he âmurdered peopleâ while he was fighting for the Islamic State group. Huzaifa also received concern from Diana Swain that he may be âlyingâ to The New York Times or CBC News.
January 2020, Douglas Murray claimed NYT was "waging a culture war vendetta against" the UK "but in doing so it is waging a campaign of misinformation against its own readers". "Ever since Britain voted to leave the EU the Gray Lady has become relentlessly critical of the UK."
"If you were to read only the NYT, youâd think there was little hope for backward, bigoted Britain".
5/24/2017 NYT published leaked photos showing the scene of the Manchester Arena bombing. Counter terror police chiefs said the leak undermined their investigation and victims' and witnesses' confidence. Manchester Police were furious & said they would stop sharing info w/ US.
Pres. Trump in a NATO summit condemned the media leaks, calling it "deeply troubling" and a "grave threat to our national security". NYT defended its decision to publish the photos, saying they were "neither graphic nor disrespectful of victims".
5/18: Peter Goodman wrote a piece called, âIn Britain, austerity is changing everything." He claimed the local fire station had been shut, despite a new one just having just been unveiled. He claimed a local museum âreceded into historyâ when the Prescot Museum was still open.

12/2018, the Twitter account of the New York Times asked people to submit stories to the paper if they had âexperienced a petty crime in Londonâ. The Guardian described the public response on Twitter as "a sarcastic deluge".
5/2018: Maya Goodfellow wrote "A New Face Wonât Change the British Governmentâs Racist Heart". She claimed the appointment of Sajid Javid as Chancellor of the Exchequer became "a shield for a govtâs institutionally racist policies" & provided no evidence of any racist policies.
Kelly Jane Torrance at The Spectator said the piece "focused on Javidâs race and decried the âcruelâ and âinhumaneâ immigration policies of the Conservative government. It did not note that immigration is still running at record levels.
3/2019: Sam Byers wrote "Britain Is Drowning Itself in Nostalgia". Byers described the UK as âpoisonedâ with âcolonial arroganceâ and suggested it was a "solipsistic backwater". Douglas Murray compared the piece to a work of fiction.
William Davies wrote "A Fanatical Sect Has Hijacked British Politics". Douglas Murray argued "What was this fanatical sect? ISIS? Extinction Rebellion? Followers of Krusty the Clown? No, the paper revealed that the people in question were Brexit supporters-
"- and the evidence that they had hijacked British politics was that they had persuaded the UK Government to exit the European Union."
When Prince Harry and Meghan announced they were leaving royal duties, Afua Hirsch wrote "Black Britons know why Meghan wants out". She said "Meghanâs decision to join the family that is the symbolic heart of the establishment responsible for this troubled history-
was perplexing to many black British people."

NYT tweeted a cartoon portraying Trump & Putin as a gay lovers, LGBT activist & Dem Rep. Brian Sims said it's time to stop the homophobic jokes. American trans activist Jeffrey Marsh said "to have a group that's as well-established as NYT personally attacking you is horrendous."
A spokesperson for The Times defended the animation.
Aug '18: NYT hired Sarah Jeong to join its editorial board as lead writer on technology & sparked a negative reaction due to derogatory tweets about white people that Jeong had posted in 2013 and 2014.
Aug 2019: Tom Wright-Piersanti was revealed to have posted several anti-Semitic tweets while working at another outlet prior to joining the Times, & several anti-Indian tweets as well. Phrases like "Crappy Jew Year," & "Jew police." NYT decided to continue his employment.
According to Moscow Times journalist Roman Badanin, editor-in-chief of independent Russian media outlet Proekt (Project), said that at least two of the NYT articles criticizing Russia, which won the Pulitzer Prize in May 2020, repeated Proekt's articles published months before.
Feb 2017: Michael Schmidt, Mark Mazzetti and Matt Apuzzo published 'Trump Campaign Aides Had Repeated Contacts With Russian Intelligence. July 2020 the Senate Judiciary Committee declassified documents that substantially undercut the reporting.
The second document contains Peter Strzokâs type-written comments disagreeing with assertions made in a New York Times article about alleged Russian intelligence ties to the Trump campaign.

Just hours before Qassim Suleimani was killed, the NYT published and article uncannily similar to the circumstances that led to his being taken out.
