don't use duolingo. it sucks ass for learning jpn, because it isn't built for asian languages. id only really recommended duolingo for learning european languages (germanic, romance, etc)

if you can afford to, use lingodeer instead. its actually designed with asian languages in mind and it's really helpful and fairly cheap.

stay consistent. im pretty bad about this due to adhd and depression, but its important. you can only learn a language if you make an effort to immerse yourself in it.

make your own flashcards. and actually use them. making them will be fun and will help you memorize them, and using them later too helps even more

kanji are important and something you will spend a lot of time on. and yes, both the onyomi and kunyomi of each kanji is important.

once you figure out the very basic particles and grammar structure, jpn is actually a very intuitive language. it seems scary due to its 3 alphabets and unique combination of both phonemic and morphemic characters, but its actually not that complicated.t

use your resources. don't confine yourself to one course, or one app, or one textbook. its important to diversify how you learn so that you know what works best and so you don't miss out on anything that isn't in your primary course

go out of your way to try to talk to native speakers. its important, since being around native speakers teaches you more about how to actually SPEAK japanese than say a book or an app.

youtube is your friend. there are TONS of great videos on youtube that will help you learn japanese.

understand that japanese and english are two languages that developed on opposite sides of the planet. they are not going to be very similar in terms of grammar and such. trying to assign a directly translated eng meaning to every jpn phrase or word won't work.
