As requested, you guys wanted me to talk about mental health as an activist. I’m reposting some art therapy prompts and a creative writing prompt I made as they can be beneficial. As an activist, self care is essential. It can be messy. Take days off to address your needs.
I made these as well that I will repost. And please only retweet both of these tweets, as they are my images. Anyways, I guess for me I have to remember that it’s not MY singular responsibility to carry weight on my shoulders. I have to put the phone down and address myself.
Being an activist doesn’t mean you need to constantly be on social media talking about it otherwise you’ll get burnt out or compassion fatigue. You need to care for yourself above anything else. Text your friends, vent, write, create, eat, shower, cleaning “declutters” your mind.
I know I’m not the poster child for mental health because I struggle for sure. When a protest wouldn’t gain traction, I’d think I failed when in reality that’s not true. I have to change my way of thinking and the way I talk about myself. That’s definitely part of it too.
Having support from your friends goes a long way, ppl who reassure you that the work ur doing is resonating w/ them & can give you accolades for your personal achievements. That support system helps you see that you’re not doing this for nothing, ya know? You’re inspiring others.
Please take care of yourselves. Make boundaries for yourself. The minute you start getting frustrated is when you need to stop. I hope this thread helps!
I feel like I should include this...”ally fatigue” is a load of shit. Imagine thinking you can support a movement and then suddenly get fatigue as an ally so you gotta stop being one for a bit. That’s shitty. Maybe don’t do that.
I think a lot of non-Black gays need to read that part...
