CW: suicide, medical/psych trauma
Throughout reading this, I kept remembering the last psychiatrist I spoke to (mercifully not the general experience I& #39;ve had) who seemed to make snap judgements & not listen & contradicted himself in a way which felt like patronizing placation https://twitter.com/anne_theriault/status/1285556648711520263">https://twitter.com/anne_ther...

I was there for med management & he, w/o doing any diagnostic testing of any sort, was treating my previous diagnoses as if they were, idk, suggestions he could pick among & add to randomly
My therapist has encouraged me to submit a complaint; I should.

I would absolutely not go to the psychiatric ward 4 blocks from my house, if I had any way to avoid it, or recommend anyone else go there, solely because an associated office employs him and that implies a lot about the standard of care.

I also couldn& #39;t stop thinking about this article by Nicholas Carter about his experience in a psychiatric ward after his then-employer, Cards Against Humanity, decided he was "crazy" for objecting to their habitual racism https://medium.com/@nicolas.j.carter/how-to-know-youre-not-insane-and-how-a-cards-against-humanity-staff-writer-was-fired-40fe07fbbfe4">https://medium.com/@nicolas....

I wish all of these weren& #39;t part of a larger, consistent pattern around mental health care particularly in psychiatric wards or other settings where the power imbalances are even more extreme than inherent been a mental health provider & patient.

I do not think it is an accident that the best experience with a psychiatrist I& #39;ve ever had by far was with someone whose regular clientele were clearly well-off professions & the worst, standing far outside a sea of mere mediocrity, was on public aid.

This piece, in the same series as the one at the top of this thread, is also excellent. https://twitter.com/anne_theriault/status/1285557599589498882">https://twitter.com/anne_ther...
