1) Parents have been discussing and sharing their experiences of removing their 4yr old child from P1 following significant emotional and physical distress and impact on their health and wellbeing.
2) Many parents are told by LA officials or workers in response to deferral discussions that their child will thrive in P1 dismissing all that the parent has said regarding their concerns.
3) Parents tell us that friends, family and professionals have told them it is normal for their 4yr old to have a meltdown every day after school, to scream, cry, have difficulty engaging in work, becoming quiet and withdrawn, refuse to engage.
4) Parents feel this is cruel and feel powerless to act watching changes in personality and behaviour of their child because they will 'get there in the end'.
Parents ask what are the long term impacts to child welbeing of sustained emotional distress.
5) Is it normalised and accepted that some 4yr olds cant cope in P1 so we just accept it? Parents have had to remove their child from P1 with the biggest fight of their lives as they are TOLD they can't do this with threats from social work and legal action.
6) So we ask again, what is the value, role and importance of parents. Who holds the power to decide what is best for our children? And more importantly is it ok for a child to have sustained emotional stress at 4yrs old?
