Standing in a historic church, you may have a strong sense of the shifting sands of time, but perhaps nowhere more than at St. Andrew's, Wood Walton, Cambridgeshire - our iconic church in the Fens - where the earth is literally moving beneath our feet.

Here, the tiled chancel is bejewelled with richly decorated glazed and encaustic tiles, and mosaics to the Evangelists. The work was completed in 1874 in memory of Emma Hussey, a local landowner.

However, as the building continues to shift due to structural movement, cracks in the floor have revealed a previous layer of tiles - also Victorian - but in a simpler style.

Wood Walton is one of the nation's favourite churches - it made it on to the cover of the book of that name, but is one of our greatest ongoing conservation challenges.
