this is straight-up one of the most terrifying things I've ever read in my life and I am going to actually insist that all my dude followers read this https://twitter.com/camcamdamn/status/1285400419964014592
Q. "what's it like being a woman"

A. "men psychologically torture you for fun and tell themselves that because they didn't actually attack you, it's all fun and games and they're still good people"
to any dude reading this and feeling superior to this shitty and monstrous guy:

when we're walking alone at night, you're all this guy to us. we can't tell from that distance that you're One of the Good Ones. we don't have the luxury of giving you the benefit of the doubt.
MORE MEN LIKE THIS, PLEASE

physically signaling "I am going out of my way to give you maximum space" is very helpful https://twitter.com/CharmingKobold/status/1285409967357530113?s=20
this feels like a great time to mention that the single most effective way to prevent mass shootings in the US would be to identify white men between 18-30 with a history of stalking, harming or abusing women and stop them from ever getting near a gun https://twitter.com/nbrink77/status/1285403861264596994?s=20
I wonder if men really truly know the extent to which every single one of us has a story like this

when my sister was in college she was followed home by a stranger who said he wouldn't go away unless she kissed him

she was sobbing when she called me https://twitter.com/Napsterrific/status/1285414300648177665?s=20
LADIES, RAISE YOUR HAND IF YOU'VE EVER HAD TO TEXT YOUR GIRLFRIENDS A SAFETY PLAN, TURN ON "FIND MY PHONE," OR MAKE A FAKE CALL WHILE IN A CAB OR UBER WITH A MALE DRIVER

white men, raise your hand if this has literally ever occurred to you in your lives https://twitter.com/BlueEyedLucille/status/1285417027826601984?s=20
isn't this just the absolute worst group bonding exercise we've ever done
the number of men in my mentions who keep suggesting violence as a solution to women’s fear of male violence (either “you should get a gun/carry a knife/learn to fight back” or “I would beat a guy up if I saw that”) is really proving y’all don’t get it

https://twitter.com/5WsH1/status/1285409470315716608?s=20
I had no idea how far this thread had blown up and this is perhaps the most devastating my mentions have ever been.

straight cis dudes, take 10 minutes and just read some of these replies. HUNDREDS of women sharing their own stories. this is the world we live in every day.
also if one more man tells me i should just buy a gun, i will block you

if your suggestion for how women can keep themselves safer only applies to WHITE women, consider shutting up

tell me if you REALLY think a woman of color who shoots her stalker will get the same treatment
I am truly staggered by the number of men who think they're helping by weighing in with suggestions of how women can modify our own behavior to feel safer

knock it off

I want to know what YOU are actively doing in your interactions with other men to fight toxic masculinity
also if your solutions are ableist (like "learn kickboxing or martial arts!") or racist (assuming every woman is safer with a gun, as though a Black woman who shoots her stalker will get the same benefit of the doubt as a white woman doing the same), they aren't solutions.
sincerely grateful to this guy for pointing out that a lot of the performative "I'm not a threat! I'm a nice guy!" behaviors men do - in all kinds of situations, not just walking down the street - are frequently traps and don't always make us feel safer. https://twitter.com/Drakolf/status/1285737746993012737?s=20
muting this thread bc the number of men (and even women, yay internalized sexism!) in my mentions doing "just buy a gun and deal with your own problems" or "lol feminists are always exaggerating" or "WHAT, SO MEN CAN'T EVEN WALK DOWN THE STREET ANYMORE?" has finally broken me
but to all the women who shared their own trauma in this thread -

I see you and I believe you and you aren't crazy and you didn't overreact and you didn't bring it on yourself and it doesn't matter what you were wearing and the things men have done to you are not your fault. 💕
