I’m seeing all over my feed concerns about missing children. #SaveTheChildren is everywhere/ and some of my millennial friends are even spending energy on it. Because what a worthy cause! Who wouldn’t want to fight human trafficking?! /1
The facts are : just because approximately 800k children are reported missing every year DOES NOT MEAN that 800k children are abducted each year. According to statistics, 99% of these children are home safe in 72 hours. Ninety-nine percent. /2
The children abducted by strangers is an infinitesimal amount. Approximately 350 people under 21 in the US *total* since 2010. Is that terrifying? Yes. Is it common? No. /3
If these people who claim there is some insane pedophile ring wanted to fight *actual human trafficking* which is very real and scary, then there are some concrete ways they could do that /4
They could adopt foster children and make sure that no one is close to aging out of the system. They could donate to organizations that make sure LGBTQ kids have a safe place to go if their families kick them out. Both of those things *alone* would make a huge dent /5
But apparently it is far more fun to be a keyboard warrior, harass @chrissyteigen, and post YouTube videos that take about 10 minutes of research to debunk and then claim you’re being “censored.” /6
Do people in power do scary things? Of course. But the practicality of hundreds of thousands of people being in on a global and then people on 4chan “discovering it” is baloney. The end/8
Just wanted to add a correction: 350 per year kidnapped by strangers, max. More than I thought, but still very few.
