Do you make these mistakes when evaluating Tesla? 👇1/x
Mistake 1: For years I believed their initial build quality would kill them 'once the big OEMs create something similar.' After 10 yrs there is still not a similar product and quality probs have declined. Warranty claims as % of sales are still lower than GM/Ford. 2/x
Mistake 2: I would fixate on believing 1 aspect of their strategy was the most important (sometimes performance, or Supercharger network). Finally realized Tesla's edge is a constellation of ideas: OTA, EV, performance, longer maintenance cycles, charging network, data plan. 3/x
Mistake 3: I failed to grasp the importance of their data policy, impacting experience, warranty cost modeling. All Teslas come w/ free internet connectivity (+ you can buy premium plan). It's tightly integrated -- in fact warranty can be voided if you disregard s/w update. 4/x
Mistake 5: I failed to grasp the power of their referral system (few OEMs have this). In 2015 it was noted that 25% of T's sales came through owner referral codes, and every $1 spent on the program translated into $42 of revenue. 6/x https://www.tesla.com/support/referral-program
Mistake 6: I believed people loved Musk, but only 'liked' the cars. Now I think it's probably the opposite, and even the (future) absence of Musk won't mean the company goes under. There are now multiple points to define the line. 7/x
Mistake 7: I thought you had to pick loving or hating Tesla. In fact just like any company you can find faults with individual products. You can even read Niedermeyer's book -- still buy a Tesla and love it. 8/x https://www.amazon.com/Ludicrous-Unvarnished-Story-Tesla-Motors/dp/1948836122
