Videogames shld have access to the same gov funding resources as any other cultural industry but I am deeply skeptical of any argument that they should be funded to sustainable jobs. Like neither AAA or indie anywhere has proved it can create sustainable jobs with any consistency
Fund videogames because they are an important cultural form that everyone should have access to expressing themselves in or because they teach really valuable transferrable skills ppl can use across sectors. Those ones are proven true, at least.
Sensitive topic I knowso I just want to make it clear: yes, I think videogames should receive public funding. No, I don't think the reason they should receive public funding is because they 'create sustainable jobs' because I don't think they do.
GDC 2019 State of the Industry survey. "the majority of respondents (over 70 percent) said they’d been making games for less than a decade". That's a very junior-heavy industry and doesn't suggest to me people have historically been able to find long-term careers here.
