I have been doing a lot of reading today because I am interested in my profession and improving my clinical approach, but I can’t help sometimes to read something and relate it to fantasy football.
After reading about decreased rotator cuff strength in handball athletes in the midseason compared to preseason, I could not help but to think about Cam Newton and his shoulder injuries. I think there is carry over here that explains why I have some questions about him in 2020.
Cam ’s History:
2016: Tore Rotator Cuff in week 14, miraculously finished the season

2018: Same issue, missed last two weeks of the season
It’s not a direct comparison but this study proved what athletic trainers, physical therapists and doctors have often believed:

As the season goes on fatigue kicks in which alters strength. As intuitive as this might seem this study provided us concrete evidence in support.
This table shows that in a sport with receptive throwing (some overhead) there was a significant decrease in strength  in the male athletes as the season progressed represented by the red box
Direct quote: “At the individual level, fewer players had ER/IR ratios below 0.75 at midseason compared to the preseason in neutral rotation “ A larger number means there is a bigger strength difference in shoulder external rotaters and internal rotaters, inferring weakness.
Increased weakness will leave the athletes at a higher risk of injury.

Referring to the same table, you see in males durin the season they jumped way above that 0.75 threshold to 1.01 (blue box)
It’s for this reason that I am more worried about Newton’s arm in 2020.

Over his career has averaged 32 pass attempts per game.

The NFL average in 2019 was around 35, New England was around 38

At a below average workload Newton’s arm has already broken down twice.
So there are a couple things I want to monitor in 2020.

1) Newton’s workload (pass attempts)
2) Throwing motion/accuracy (which I break down below)
Good Healthy Cam (1)

Deep ball accuracy
Good Cam continued from alternative angle.

Seemingly effortless. Almost like a flick of the wrist.
After a presumed shoulder injury: Bad Cam (1)

An easy 20-yard pass is short and behind.
Bad Cam (2)

Underthrown and short
From another angle you can see how labored this is and how much force in put behind that thrown and it was still short.

Clearly Cam was not healthy here and after the season that proved to be correct.
All in all the Patriots probably know all this and did their homework and I’m sure they are going to have a plan.

But looking at Cams workload early will help with my confidence forecasting the ROS
