Ok, so I want to make my thoughts known:
Last week a comedy show I recently started following made a comment about type 2 diabetes looking a certain way. And while I tried to reason through why NOT saying anything would be helpful, I’ve concluded it isn’t.
I am not going to not stand up for what I believe in.
In my personal opinion and through my own experiences, making comments about diabetes as a whole (all types) and saying there’s a specific look is not helpful.
Already — as a type 1 diabetic — I am told again and again that I cannot eat certain foods (sugary foods, whether natural or artificial) and literally have those foods withheld from me.
Because type ONE diabetes is the EXACT SAME as Type 2, when it’s not. This also paints type 2 diabetics into a bad picture.
Additionally, this causes unnecessary shift in blame for all types of diabetes, mainly type 1 and type 2. We did not choose whether we would have diabetes or not.
Already we’re being told this virus could hurt us. And now to hear influencers make jokes about it, I’ve had enough
Before we make jokes about something we don’t know anything about, please first ask yourself if you’d want someone to make a joke about something YOU deal with.

No more making jokes about diabetes
