New FHSAA board of directors president Lauren Otero is sharp. We’re still in the early stages of this meeting.
The chat function was just disabled on the FHSAA YouTube feed. Saw @unclelukereal1 mention that he submitted a couple questions to the board. Doesn’t appear questions will be taken tonight though.
Dr. Jennifer Maynard of Mayo Clinic just said SMAC committee recommends delay of start to season for football and volleyball.
Maynard is reeling off a long list of recommendations from SMAC committee, which were unanimously agreed upon by a 10-0 vote. Both football and volleyball would be delayed by at least a few weeks beginning with the opening of schools. Still plenty of discussion to be had.
Mark Schuster says “we have to trust in the medical people” while explaining to board that FHSAA should delay the start of fall sports. It was a passionate moment during an otherwise icy conversation so far.
Bobby Jones says “it goes in the face of what the governor says” when comparing the state’s stance on plan to open schools on time with the idea of delaying start of sports. FHSAA has been consistent about following lead of governor up to this point.
Correction: that should read Bobby Johns, not Jones...
Carlos Ochoa says South Florida is “still at ground zero” and that they haven’t seen a field or been in a building since March. Says he favors taking medical opinions into consideration when making a decision on starting sports.
There’s now over 3.300 people viewing the FHSAA board of directors meeting on YouTube. We’re an hour into it and no closer to getting a decision on fall sports just yet.
Florida is home to five of the Top 10 largest school districts in the country - Miami-Dade, Broward, Hillsborough, Orange, Palm Beach counties - and that makes things complicated when it comes to a safe and timely return to school and fall sports.
Some of the concerns being brought up in this FHSAA meeting - such as who made up the 16-person fall sports task force - sound like they should’ve been brought up weeks and/or months ago. Did fall sports coaches not have a say in those sessions?
George Tomyn of FHSAA goes on record again starting that the association does not support the recommendation to delay start of fall sports as presented by the fall sports task force. If that holds up, the first day of football practice will be Monday, July 27.
