Why does the BBC misrepresent Boris Johnson’s words here? He pledges to ban “gay conversion therapy”. That is correct and we welcome this announcement. But then the BBC makes a serious error. It defines “conversion therapy” to include “gender identity”. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-53477323
Why is this so alarming? First, it is not what Johnson said. Second, including “gender identity” in the definition of conversion therapy is following the dogma of gender activists. They want a 12-year-old girl who says she is a boy, for instance, to be “affirmed” as a boy.
If you were to include “gender identity” in a ban on “conversion therapy”, it would become illegal for psychotherapists to do their job. They would not be allowed to explore all the reasons for the child’s self-diagnosis as “trans”. This would cause untold harm to kids.
It is outrageous that the BBC seemingly promotes the activists’ playbook instead of keeping to what the PM said. We know that homophobia, autism and other factors are sometimes involved when kids in their turbulent teen years identify as trans.
These kids need appropriate care and help. Sending them down a path of medicalisation without exploring all the issues is gross negligence. And misrepresenting the government’s announcement is also negligence on the part of the public broadcaster.
